CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Kate didn’t sleep well. How was somebody supposed to sleep well after they’d been kissed like that? Surely not every kiss in the world would rock a person off their axis.

Not that she would know as that was the one and only time she’d been really kissed. Tim Fletch had put his overly moist mouth on her in the sixth grade, but Zara had pulled him off and punched him for her.

Always have someone else fight your battles, don’t you, Kate? Not this time. Kisses or not. Confusion or not. She would not allow Brody to be caught in the crossfire of her own problems. If she had any New Year’s resolutions, that was it.

Which meant she couldn’t kiss Brody again. Not that he probably would. He’d just kissed her because it was New Year’s. That was all. He wasn’t really interested.

What if he is really interested?

Her stomach swooped because lonely girls who’d been isolated and shunned since the age of sixteen had to develop excellent imaginations, and Brody felt like some culmination of every fairy tale she’d ever dreamed up. Strong and handsome. Gentle and kind. Good all the way through. Protective and self-sufficient. She wasn’t sure how he could be real, but she had to get it through her head that no matter how real he was, he wasn’t for her.

Most especially now. She had to keep him far away from anything to do with her father.

When it was finally a decent hour to get up, she tried to creep out of bed, assuming he’d fallen asleep in his chair. But he was sitting there, eyes tracking her movements in the murky dark of morning in the cabin.

She blinked at him, her thoughts fracturing in a million different directions. Except the one she really couldn’t entertain. Couldn’t we kiss some more?

“You didn’t sleep,” she said, sounding strangled even to her own ears.

“Here and there.” He smiled and held up his phone. “One of my brothers should be here any minute. They drove Zara’s truck over, far as they could, then used a snowmobile to get the rest of the way. They’ll take us back to the truck and then we’ll head back to the ranch.”

The ranch. Then home. This whole...thing was over. Which was good, what with his severe cut and her concussion. Doctors and home. Her mother. Life, back to normal.

And somehow finding a way to keep Brody out of her family drama. Because he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t just back off. She’d really have to convince him he needed to let it go.

She swallowed. It figured, didn’t it, she finally had a man in her life—sort of—who she’d like to keep there, in a variety of different ways, but she had to push him out. For his own good.

“That’s great. You really need to get your back checked out.”

He stood, slowly. Somehow, even though he’d just sat in that uncomfortable chair all night, he looked perfectly rested. Even though he had that awful cut on his back, which she kept forgetting because he moved as if it didn’t bother him at all.
